A Third Ladybird Book of British Birds and Their Nests

Written by Brian Vesey-Fitzgerald with colour illustrations of both the bird and its egg by Roland Green, A Third Ladybird book of British Birds and Their Nests was created for children but frankly we find it useful too. Encouraging birdwatching of common birds and their nests (with a playful note in its introduction reminding kids not to disturb them), the book provides characterful profiles of each bird, its habitat, eating habits and nesting grounds — all in about 150 words.

Also, we think that ‘Sea Pie’ is up there with our absolute favourite names for a bird — if you have a rival for the top spot let us know.

Brian Vesey-Fitzgerald (1900-1981) was a naturalist and writer of books on wildlife, cats, and dogs. He was the staff naturalist for The Field magazine, becoming editor from 1938 to 1946. He then devoted his time to writing and broadcasting.
